Andrews, Travis M. “Netflix Forever Changed Traditional Television. Now, It’s Becoming Traditional Television.” The Washington Post, WP Company, 19 Aug. 2018, http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2018/08/19/netflix-forever-changed-traditional-television-now-its-becoming-traditional-television/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.0d90eae6c834.

This article by The Washington Post discusses the ways in which Netflix is slowly becoming traditional television. This comes as a result of the decline of revenue and the new streaming service competition arriving. The article revolves around Netflix’s move to advertisements between shows as well as the removal of their rating system. Netflix plans to utilize advertisements to raise revenues and have them play between episodes. Netflix also no longer has a star-rating system for their content. Users can no longer rate the movies and tv shows that they watch on the service. The article also mentions Netflix attempt to “bring back” romantic comedy movies to bring more users to the platform. I plan to use this article as evidence for the ways in which Netflix is struggling due to financial strains. I also want to highlight the approach that Netflix is taking to normalize their service in the television industry and bring more people to the service.

Bakare, Lanre. “Netflix Has Forever Changed the Way We Consume Television | Lanre Bakare.” The Guardian, Guardian News and Media, 21 July 2018, http://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/jul/21/netflix-gamble-original-content-changed-way-consume-television-forever.

It mentions the several different options of content that is provided on Netflix like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Black Mirror and how important they were in the success of Netflix. Bakare also mentions the gamble that Netflix took by acquiring the rights to make the remake of House of Cards. The success of the show inspired future content. I plan to use this article to support my discussion of how Netflix changed the television industry and how it influenced future streaming services. The article brings up Amazon Prime and that’s one of the streaming services that was inspired by Netflix to create their own content. This article also gives a brief background on Netflix’s history that I will use to explain its origin and how the service came to be.

Barker, Cory. and Wiatrowski, Myc. and EBSCOhost.  The age of Netflix: critical essays on streaming media, digital delivery and instant access / edited by Cory Barker and Myc Wiatrowski. McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers Jefferson, North Carolina. 2017. Print.

This book was written by Cory Barker and it contains many different essays discussing the advancement of digital media and how the Netflix era has impacted the way we consume content and the approach of making content. It breaks down Netflix as a producer and as a distributor and how it allows more people in different countries the access to different kinds of content. It also discusses the ways that Netflix has been use for social justice and activism. I plan to use this book for my research because it talks about the different kinds of impacts that Netflix has had, not just on entertainment. It has allowed people of different backgrounds to create different kinds of stories as well as produce. It also allows for new kinds of representation. This book can provide evidence as to why streaming services are revolutionary and the reasons why many companies are rushing to create their own streaming service.

This book by Mareike Jenner discuss the huge impact that Netflix has had on the television industry. It discusses the significant changes that television has had after Netflix’s introduction. Topics like binge-watching and original content have granted Netflix the opportunity to change television as we know it. I plan to use this book for my research because Jenner describes in depth the ways that Netflix changed television. Viewers are given more control and Netflix has taken advantage of that in order to gain more viewers and give them the option of choosing anything on demand. This book follows the methods that Netflix has taken to market and organize their content more in-depth to become one of the most successful streaming service. This book provides great insight on the impact of streaming services and how they succeed. It also explains the reasons as to why consumer control is very important in entertainment and that will support my argument in why representation in story-telling is very important.

McDonald, Kevin, and Daniel Smith-Rowsey. The Netflix Effect: Technology and Entertainment in the 21st Century. New York, NY: Bloomsbury Academic, an Imprint of Bloomsbury, 2016. Print.

In this book by McDonald and Smith-Rowsey, they discuss the effects that Netflix has had on the entertainment industry in the 21st century. It documents the rise that Netflix had within digital media. The streaming service used a different approach to gain more viewership and had a different model of media production and distribution. I plan to use this book in my research because it directly tackles the impact that Netflix made in television and entertainment in general. It also introduces many concepts that began on Netflix like the term “binge-watching.” Binge-watching launched a new kind of experience in television where people watching episode after episode of a television show without any interruption. This book provides more different kinds of new concepts that began on Netflix and I plan to incorporate that into my research. It also describes the new kinds of experience Netflix fives access to which is very important to highlight.

Morgan, Blake. “What Is The Future Of Television?” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 7 July 2019, http://www.forbes.com/sites/blakemorgan/2019/07/05/what-is-the-future-of-television/#5b05979959de.

In this article by Forbes, Morgan speaks upon the impact that Netflix has made in the way that content is consumed. Netflix has been able to catapult many new actors into overnight stardom through new series on their service. Many consumers also rather use Netflix than cable because everything is on demand. The general public would rather have instant access to different kinds of content at their choosing. Morgan also discusses the ways that Netflix is choosing to spend their money. Netflix is using 85% of their revenue to create original content in order to compete with future streaming services that are beginning to roll out. I plan to use this article to explain the success of Netflix. This article explains the reasons as to why streaming services have become more successful than cable. This article overall supports my argument of how streaming services have changed the television industry in the 21st century.

Sharma, Amol. “Netflix Fights to Keep Its Most Watched Shows: ‘Friends’ and ‘The Office’.” The Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones & Company, 24 Apr. 2019, http://www.wsj.com/articles/netflix-battles-rivals-for-its-most-watched-shows-friends-and-the-office-11556120136.

In this article by The Wall Street Journal, Sharma reports that Netflix will be losing The Office and Friends by the end of the year due to competing streaming services. Many services like HBO Max and NBC’s untitled service are beginning to roll out, meaning that Netflix will begin to lose the rights to many of their most popular content. The article reports that 80% of Netflix’ top 10 programs are owned by other companies. The Office and Friends alone are responsible for more than 77 billion minutes watched on the streaming service. This will serve as a game changer for future streaming services. I plan to use this article because I want to discuss the changing climate of streaming services. This article written by Sharm references many different pieces of evidence to support my argument that streaming services will soon be divided by their exclusive content. It also discusses the increase in viewership of older tv shows which contributes to the increase in streaming services.

VanDerWerff, Emily Todd. “The Future of Streaming Is the Cable Bundle.” Vox, Vox, 15 Mar. 2019, http://www.vox.com/culture/2019/3/15/18225269/streaming-future-cable-netflix-hulu-disney.

This article by Vox discusses the potential of bundled cable and streaming services. In the past year, Netflix has had to cancel many of their original programming as a result of a decrease in revenue as well as the rise of other streaming services. Many streaming services are gaining the rights to many beloved shows currently streaming on Netflix. As a result, Netflix could lose a lot of money over the loss of their most popular shows. This could result in the bundling of channels with streaming services. I plan to use this article to demonstrate the possible route that future streaming services can take. The climate of television is constantly changing, and Netflix could hit a bottom with the introduction of new services. Bundling could be a possible option as many other services like Amazon Prime and Hulu already have bundle options. This article provides great insight on what the future of streaming could look like.

Viruet, Pilot. “Why Netflix Has Decided to Make Diversity a Top Priority.” Vice, VICE, 24 Feb. 2017, http://www.vice.com/en_us/article/z4gmw5/why-netflix-has-decided-to-make-diversity-a-top-priority.

This article by Vice discusses the diversity that Netflix has achieved in the past years through their content. Many of their tv shows and films have been able to tell stories of those who are underrepresented. Shows like Orange is the New Black, One Day at a Time, Dear White People and more are just some examples of the kind of story telling that Netflix has offed through their original content. I want to use this article because it highlights the kinds of representation that streaming services like Netflix have to offer. The success of Netflix has also influenced more streaming services to offer similar kinds of storytelling like Ramy on Hulu and Transparent on Amazon Prime. This article emphasizes the reasons why streaming services are important for representation. Being able to have original content on streaming services grant creators more freedom to tell different kinds of stories and Netflix has been a pioneer for the future of streaming.
